Synopsis

Crowds in London have been relishing in musical productions such as Sister Act the Musical and The Lion King for some time now, the former running until October 2010 in the capital and the latter continuing after more than ten years. But these shows have something in common – they are both adapted from movies starring the hugely popular performer Whoopi Goldberg – and this comparison can now be given to another show set to open in the West End. In 2011 audiences will have the chance to witness a brand new stage musical adaptation of Ghost in the capital’s Piccadilly Theatre.

Ghost, of course, is the classic 1990 movie that starred Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg and would go on to earn the latter an Academy Award for her portrayal of the ‘phoney’ psychic Oda Mae Brown. From director Jerry Zucker it would earn widespread praise and provided cinema with one of its most iconic scenes – the love scene between Swayze and Moore next to a pottery wheel. It is still held in high regard to this day and this is despite emerging more than 20 years ago, which is a testament not only to the performances of those involved, but also for the compelling story that is about the be retold.

The plot focuses on the couple of Sam and Molly (Swayze and Moore onscreen, Richard Fleeshman and Caissie Levy onstage), who are torn apart by a violent mugger who murders Sam in cold blood in the street. Sam, stuck between our world and the afterlife, must find a way of protecting Molly, fearing that the murderer could take her life as well, and in doing so he calls upon an unlikely ally. Oda Mae Brown (Sharon D Clarke) is a phoney psychic who claims that she can talk to the dead and when Sam lands in her territory she is shocked when she finally makes true on her claims and she ultimately helps him to protect Molly from an untimely death.

An expert cast has been brought in to revive the iconic roles, with Richard Fleesham appearing following his appearance in Legally Blonde the Musical at the Savoy Theatre, Caissie Levy previously appearing in Hair and Sharon D Clarke in We Will Rock You.

The cast will step into the roles first of all at the Manchester Opera House, with its run at the Piccadilly Theatre beginning on Tuesday 19th July 2011 (with previews from Wednesday 22nd June 2011).
