The Victoria Palace Theatre remains the home to the long-running and enormously popular musical Billy Elliot, based upon the acclaimed and well-remembered 2000 movie of the same name. It features many of the key ingredients of a great musical, from stand-out music (devised by none other than Elton John) and wonderful performances to a compelling story full of characters with great ambitions. It is no wonder it has found a place in the hearts of London theatre fans everywhere and it is likely that it will continue to delight audiences way into the future.
The story of Billy Elliot focuses on a young boy growing up in the North East in the 1980s, a time in which the government of Margaret Thatcher was at great odds with coal miners around the country. With the threat of mass closures many workers strike across Billy Elliot’s home town and amongst them are his father and brothers. But Billy has other things on his mind – rather than following his family down the pits or even becoming a boxer like his father desires, he has found an altogether different passion. Billy wants to perform ballet. At first he is worried about his family’s reaction but eventually it is their help that gives him the courage to try out for a place at the Royal Ballet School.
The movie from 2000 introduced audiences to the actor Jamie Bell, who has since gone on to appear in the likes of Jumper and King Kong, in addition to the upcoming movie The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. It also featured writing from the renowned Lee Hall, a key player in the stage version as well – alongside Stephen Daldry and Peter Darling who also played a part in the movie version. So it is a passionate team working behind the scenes and that has ensured that the magic from the silver screen has been passed onto the London theatre stage.
And with the music of Sir Elton John propelling it onwards, Billy Elliot has been hugely successful ever since it opened its door at the Victoria Palace Theatre in 2005. It has since been enjoyed all over the world and become a huge hit. So it is likely that the story of Billy Elliot is one that people will remember well into the future.
Billy Elliot the Musical continues its run at the Victoria Palace Theatre and looks set to remain for the foreseeable future.
