Synopsis

The West End is full of musicals that attract blockbuster crowds, but “Stomp” manages to stand out amongst the rest as a truly unique stage spectacular – one that the producers like to call a ‘percussive stage performance’. Ever since the current run began in the capital back in 2002 it has been attracting an abundance of fans and this is a trend that spreads up and down the country, with the touring version continuously attracting curious theatregoers and others talking about it regularly. It has now been twenty years since it first appeared on the scene and it is likely that it will remain for some time to come.

The show was first witnessed by a London audience in 1991 when it made its debut at the Bloomsbury Theatre, following a world premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe earlier that same year. But what began as a small production born on its success in the Scottish capital would eventually blossom into the blockbuster show that audiences see today at the Ambassador’s Theatre. The cast has increased in size, the moves have increased in scope and the audience has expanded massively and so it is no wonder that so many people know the name “Stomp” up and down the country.

The idea behind “Stomp” is that it is a musical stage show that utilises everyday items to create a percussive stage performance. An array of performers take to the stage (only eight back in 1991, but this has since increased to thirty) and utilising dance, sound and comedy they pick up a range of items and create some spectacular drum beats. These items could include bin lids, but they also include beer cans, brushes, toilet plungers, wheel trims and steel-toed work boots, amongst others. If you have not seen “Stomp”, then you are unlikely to have seen anything else like it.

The men behind the show are Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas and they met and began performing together in the 1980s, creating “Stomp” in the 1990s an going on to earn recognition with awards such as the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Choreography in 1994. It has been quite a journey and one that will ensure they stay in the spotlight for some time to come.

Stomp continues its run at the Ambassador’s Theatre where it is likely to remain well into the new decade.
