Synopsis

We Will Rock You is not alone in celebrating the work of a famous band, after all Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys and Thriller Live all feature the songs of ABBA, The Four Seasons and Michael Jackson respectively. But what sets We Will Rock You apart from them is its imaginative story, which not only features the music of Queen but also incorporates many references to their work within its plot. The result has been one of the most successful shows currently operating in the West End – one that continues to draw in the fans and break records almost a decade since it opened at the Dominion Theatre in 2002.

The story of We Will Rock You transports audiences 300 year into the future, where the Earth is a very different place. In the production Globalisation is absolutely complete, the world is now known as Planet Mall and it is run by the authoritarian Globalsoft Corporation, with the evil Killer Queen ruling supreme. In this dystopian future all forms of expression are outlawed, and this includes music, with everyone thinking and acting the same.

But the Bohemians, a group of freedom fighters, dislike this and want to return the world to the time they call The Rhapsody. Amongst them are characters such as Galileo and Scaramouche and to return the world to this golden age they know that they are going to have to go on a long journey, one that will see them discovering the guitar known as the Mighty Axe of the Hairy One and facing the Killer Queen once and for all.

But as this is a Queen musical it also features some stand out songs, which include Don’t Stop Me Now, Another One Bites The Dust, I Want To Break Free, Bohemian Rhapsody, A Kind Of Magic, Hammer To Fall, Who Wants To Live Forever, Radio Ga Ga, Play The Game, Under Pressure and the title song itself We Will Rock You, amongst many others.

The production was penned by comedian Ben Elton, first opened its doors in 2002 at the place it still calls its home, the Dominion Theatre, and went on to break awards and make the headlines. It has been a blockbuster success and even its touring version causes great fanfare when it arrives in town.

We Will Rock You continues at the Dominion Theatre and is likely to stay there for some time to come.
