Synopsis

More than a decade since it opened its doors at the Prince Edward Theatre, the ABBA-based musical Mamma Mia! continues its strong run at the Prince of Wales Theatre in the West End, where it has been seen by enormous numbers of people. The show has proven to be an enormous success story, not only attracting theatregoers to its West End home but also spawning a movie adaptation that broke box office records in the UK. So to call Mamma Mia! a success would be an understatement and it is likely that audiences will be flocking to see the show for some time to come.

The story of Mamma Mia! follows mother and daughter Donna and Sophie who live on a Greek Island and run a hotel. Donna remembers a past that included romantic affairs with some handsome men in her youth whilst Sophie is gearing up to get married to the dishy young man named Sky. But there’s a problem – Sophie does not know the identity of her father and there’s nothing she wants more than for her old man to walk her down the aisle. And so, armed with her mother’s diary and using her ingenuity, she concocts a plan to discover the trip before the big day, narrowing the candidates down to three men and inviting them all to the wedding. Surely she will know her own father when she sees him? Surely nothing can go wrong?

Mamma Mia! is propelled along by the glorious and timeless music of ABBA, with tracks such as Thank You For The Music, Dancing Queen, Chiquita, S O S, Waterloo and Super Trouper making their way to the stage. But let’s not forget the song Mamma Mia!, which also makes a triumphant appearance during the course of the show.

Having opened in April 1999 and transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre during the course of its run, it found great success in 2008 when Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Julie Walters, amongst others, starred in the hit movie adaptation. It caused a sensation worldwide and in the UK even managed to beat the The Dark Knight as the highest grossing film of the year.

So makes sure you catch Mamma Mia! for a memorable musical theatre show as it continues its run well into 2011 and, surely, beyond.
