Ealing Studios were a famous west London film company who created many movies which are now considered classics. It is was the creative vehicle behind such well known greats as The Man in The White Suit and Whiskey Galore! But by far it’s most famous and enjoyable comedy was The Ladykillers. A hit on it’s release, it continues to delight and amuse successive generations.
The plot centres around Mrs Wilberforce, an old lady, and her spare room which she has rented out. A charming man appears to take her up on the offer: he insists he will be using it for highbrow occupations such as rehearsals with his string quartet. Though Mrs Wilberforce is initially delighted, it turns out that things are not quite what they seem. The man calling himself Professor Marcus is in fact a notorious criminal leading, rather than a string quartet, a bunch of criminals and thieves! From the unsuspecting Mrs Wilberforce’s room they plot the a dastardly scheme to make themselves rich, whilst at the same time trying to keep up appearances in order to hoodwink the old lady, with hilarious consequences.
The film has been adapted for the stage by Graham Linehan, the comedy genius behind the likes of such hit shows as Father Ted and The IT Crowd. Linehan has added his own personal magic to the original classic Ealing script.
As if Linehan’s all star talent wasn’t enough to tempt you, the producers have also lined up some of the greatest British stars of today’s comedy scene. Taking the lead as the questionable Professor Marcus is everyone’s favourite bad guy: step forward Peter Capaldi, the man who found fame as the notorious Malcolm Tucker in BBC’s The Thick of It. Starring alongside him will be Stephen Wight as Harry, the role originally made famous by Peter Sellers. Also appearing are comedian Ben Miller as Louis and James Fleet (of The Vicar of Dibley fame) as the Major. Mrs. Wilberforce will be played by Marcia Warren.
This is a great opportunity for an excellent night out at the theatre. With an stellar cast and a well respected creative team developing one of the last centuries greatest comedies, it really doesn’t get much better than this. Make sure you are a part of it by buying your tickets now.
