Synopsis

Those headed to the Duchess Theatre from October will be able to revisit Lee Hall’s play concerning miners in the North East taking on a whole new set of experiences as “The Pitmen Painters” returns to the capital. The production first appeared in 2007 when it was visitors to the Lyttelton National Theatre that got a look in but this time around the show will be given the West End treatment at the Duchess. Considering the amount of admirers that show already has it should not have too much trouble picking up punters when theatre tickets go on sale.

Lee Hall is best known to audiences for his work with “Billy Elliot the Musical”, which he penned following his work writing the screenplay for the movie on which it is based. However, he has plenty of other credits to his name as well, from “Spoonface Steinberg”, “Wittgenstein on Tyne” and “I Luv You Jimmy Spud”, among others. As such he has always been a sought-after writer whose work continues to make an impression.

In the “Pitmen Painters” he turns his attention to the novel by William Feaver, which itself was based on a true story, and as such tells the story of a group of Ashington Miners that hire Robert Lyons to give them art appreciation classes in the evening. Eventually they paint their own work and they soon attract outside attention, with their work making it to prestigious collections and their friends amongst the best known names in the field.

“The Pitmen Painters” opens at the Duchess Theatre on Tuesday 11th October 2011 (with previews starting on Wednesday 5th October 2011).
