Synopsis

Take another trip to the Catskill Mountains when you arrive in the West End by picking up theatre tickets and heading to the Aldwych Theatre, where the blockbuster musical adaptation of Dirty Dancing continues to draw in huge crowds. Ever since it opened its doors at the venue in 2006 it has proven to be a popular part of the West End musical theatre scene and this is thanks not only to the nostalgia audiences have for the classic 1980s movie but also for the high quality of the work onstage and behind the scenes.

Originally starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in lead roles, Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story Live on Stage has featured some acclaimed performers of its own, with the former contestant of The X Factor Ray Quinn amongst those to step into the role of Johnny over the years. The young star bowed out of the role in November 2010, but he is unlikely to be the last well known performer to inhabit the part as Johnny and ‘Baby’ Houseman continue their romantic holiday affair.

The plot of Dirty Dancing follows the duo as they indulge in their feelings at New York’s Catskill Mountains. ‘Baby’ Houseman has arrived at the destination for the annual family vacation and is staying with her parents in the Kellerman’s holiday camp. But what at first seems like any other family trip soon becomes the experience of a lifetime as Baby runs into the handsome dance instructor Johnny, and he teaches her more than just dance routines.

After teaching her some raunchy moves it soon becomes clear that Baby is falling for Johnny and they manage to keep their romance a secret from the strict patriarch Mr Houseman, but when Johnny’s dance partner becomes pregnant and illegal steps are taken to deal with it, Mr Houseman forbids Baby from seeing him. It is just one of the many emotional ups and downs provided by the compelling story of Dirty Dancing!

The movie, and subsequently the stage version, features some classic musical numbers that are held in high regards even to this day. From (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life to She’s Like the Wind, the show is a spectacular treat for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage continues at the Aldwych Theatre and is currently booking until 2011.
