Phantom of the Opera
Her Majesty's Theatre
Synopsis
Two of the most famous musicals running in the West End are based on enormously popular French novels. One is a story set during Napoleonic struggle in the form of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo and the other is a piece featuring one of the most iconic characters in musical theatre history – The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. The latter has been in the capital since 1986 and has remained at Her Majesty’s Theatre for the duration of its run, allowing huge audiences to travel to the venue over two decades as The Phantom of the Opera became one of the best known shows in the world.
So successful is The Phantom of the Opera that a sequel production entitled Love Never Dies recently opened its doors at the Adelphi Theatre and became a huge success. It has allowed the character of the Phantom to flourish as the iconic figure continues to stay in the spotlight and progress as a cultural icon, whilst the stories of other characters like Christine Daaé and Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny have also been fleshed out.
The story is set around a hundred years ago at the Paris Opera House in 1911, where audiences flock to witness some glamorous shows and where a legend is known to lurk behind the scenes and cause great trouble. The legend is a disfigured young composer who hides his face behind a signature mask and regularly wreaks havoc upon the performances when matters do not go according to his plan. But then there is Christine Daaé, a woman that the Phantom secretly admires, and when she does not get a role in the brand new opera Il Muto he decides to take matters into his own hands.
The original novel was entitled Le Fantome de L’Opera and was translated into English in 1911 and whilst it was adapted into another musical in the 1970s it would not be until Andrew Lloyd Webber’s version in 1986 that huge success on the stage beckoned. Since it opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre it has gone on to be seen around the world, from Broadway and Los Angeles and beyond, and as a result is one of the most successful musicals of all time.
The Phantom of the Opera is at Her Majesty’s Theatre and despite a run that has lasted more than two decades continues at the venue indefinitely.
