Synopsis

When the green ogre Shrek first appeared in cinemas around the world audiences were greeted to a hilarious animated adventure set within the world of fairy tales. It was an instant success and not only would it spawn three sequels it would also spawn a Christmas spin-off and a well known Broadway musical under the direction of Jason Moore. Now it is time for West End audiences to get a look in as the ogre makes his way to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London, as Shrek the Musical, retaining Moore as director, continues its reign of success.

Moore is well versed in bringing some fantastic musicals to the stage and on the other side of the Atlantic he has been responsible for the Broadway versions of some classic shows, from Les Misérables to Avenue Q and so it is safe to say that Shrek the Musical is in good hands. But for its London run various changes have been made which address issues audiences had with the American run, giving onlookers in the UK a new and streamlined classic. Add to this the casting, which includes Nigel Lindsay as Shrek, Amanda Holden as Princes Fiona, Nigel Harman as Lord Farquaad and Richard Blackwood as Donkey, and you have the make-up of a stand-out show.

The plot mirrors the original story in the film series, with audiences introduced to Shrek in his swamp home within a large forest. In this world inhabited by an array of classic names from the world of fairy tales he embarks on a journey alongside his new companion, Donkey, and attempts to rescue a Princess from a tower. But he has made a big mistake; Princess Fiona needed rescuing alright, but it was hoped that it would be a handsome Prince that did it and unknown to Shrek this has prevented a horrible curse from being lifted of her.

Nigel Lindsay, as Shrek, has previously appeared in the likes of Sucker Punch at the Royal Court Theatre, whilst Blackwood, as Donkey, has credits that include The Richard Blackwood Show. Then there’s Amanda Holden, the well known actress from the likes of Kiss Me Kate, so audiences are in for a great time when the show opens in 2011.

Shrek the Musical is set to run at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, beginning on Tuesday 7th June 2011 (with previews starting from May 2011).
